History & Origin
The pastel de nata, literally meaning "cream tartlet", is truly the icon of Portuguese pastry. It originated in the early 17th century, within the famous Jerónimos Monastery, located in the Belém district of Lisbon. It is said that the monks invented this recipe to use up the egg yolks they had in abundance, as the egg whites were used to make communion wafers.
Description
A small custard tart nestled in a crispy puff pastry, its cream is smooth and caramelized on the surface. Made with milk, egg yolks, sugar, and vanilla, it combines sweetness, lightness, and indulgence in a single bite.
Ingredients
Milk, sugar, salt, egg yolk, wheat flour (gluten), lemon.
